Our story
They solved it by hand. Then they built the AI.
Indago was founded by the people behind the Golden State Killer case and the FBI’s genetic genealogy program. We built the platform we wished we’d had.
2018
Forty years of searching. A different approach.
For four decades the Golden State Killer evaded investigators across California. Steve Kramer, then FBI counsel, helped assemble and co-lead a small team that tried a new technique: investigative genetic genealogy. It worked. The case changed how unsolved violent crime is investigated.
- 2018
The Golden State Killer is identified
A six-person team, co-led by Steve Kramer, uses genetic genealogy to identify the suspect in one of the most notorious unsolved cases in American history.
- After
The FBI builds a program
Kramer and Special Agent Stephen Busch co-found the FBI’s forensic genetic genealogy effort, and Busch architects its national program. They train investigators and help solve dozens of cases.
- 2022
Indago is founded
Doing the work by hand wasn’t fast enough for the backlog of unsolved cases. Busch and Kramer left the Bureau to build software that could.
- Today
Indago
AI that automates investigative genetic genealogy, aggregating evidence at scale, with investigators in command.
